چکیده

Programmable devices are a key technology for the design of embedded systems, such as in the consumer electronics market. Processor cores are used as building blocks for more and more embedded system designs, since they provide a unique combination of features: exibility and reusability. Processor-based design implies that compilers capable of generating e cient machine code are necessary. However, highly e cient compilers for embedded processors are hardly available. In particular, this holds for digital signal processors (DSPs). This contribution is intended to outline di erent aspects of DSP compiler technology. First, we cover demands on compilers for embedded DSPs, which are partially in sharp contrast to traditional compiler construction. Secondly, we present recent advances in DSP code optimization techniques, which explore a comparatively large search space in order to achieve high code quality. Finally, we discuss the di erent approaches to retargetability of compilers, that is, techniques for automatic generation of compilers from processor models.

A retargetable VLIW compiler framework for DSPs withinstruction-level parallelism

A standard design methodology for embedded processors today is the system-on-a-chip design with potentially multiple heterogeneous processing elements on a chip, such as a very long instruction word (VLIW) processor, digital signal processor (DSP), and field-programmable gate array. To be able to program these devices, we need compilers that are capable of generating efficient code for the diff...

Machine-Description Driven Compilers for EPIC and VLIW Processors

In the past, due to the restricted gate count available on an inexpensive chip, embedded DSPs have had limited parallelism, few registers and irregular, incomplete interconnectivity. More recently, with increasing levels of integration, embedded VLIW processors have started to appear. Such processors typically have higher levels of instruction-level parallelism, more registers, and a relatively...

Compiler-in-loop Architecture Exploration for Efficient Application Specific Embedded Processor Design

Retargetable C compilers are key tools for efficient architecture exploration for embedded processors. In this paper we describe a novel approach to retargetable compilation based on LISA, an industrial processor modeling language for efficient application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP) design. In order to circumvent the well-known trade-off between flexibility and code quality in re...

Developing a Retargetable Compiler for Mips32k and Arm7tdmi-s

The market of embedded systems is spreading faster than that of information technology. Mostly, the segments of embedded systems are consumer markets, with very short product lifetimes and short market windows. Hence, time-to-market is an important factor. Cutting down the time to market for products that became more and more complex is possible through “re-use”. Another important characteristi...

A VLIW-Based Post Compilation Framework for Multimedia Embedded DSPs with Hardware Specific Optimizations

In high performance and low power multimedia embedded system design, VLIW-based embedded DSPs compilers that exploit ILP have become popular and play an important role today. For this reason, we need optimizing embedded DSP compilers that can both generate capable and efficient code in terms of performance, power, size, and productivity. In this paper, we show a post-compilation framework that ...
